Erias Lukwago is expected to appear in court on Wednesday to face treason-related charges approved by the DPP after spending two days in detention.
Lukwago was arrested by armed security operatives at his home in Wakaliga on June 15 and taken to an undisclosed location. His arrest occurred as he was preparing to serve court summons on Muhoozi Kainerugaba over alleged threats against Kizza Besigye.
Gen Kainerugaba later acknowledged ordering the arrest, posted comments and photos about Lukwago on social media, and warned others against serving him court papers. He subsequently announced that Lukwago would be handed over to police.
The arrest has sparked criticism from opposition groups, lawyers, and human rights activists. The Uganda Law Society described it as an attack on legal processes and the administration of justice.
As one of Besigye's lead lawyers, Lukwago's prosecution is expected to intensify concerns about the political implications of the ongoing treason cases involving opposition figures.
