WhatsApp is introducing optional usernames, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. You will need to know someone's exact username to start a new conversation. You can reserve yours in the app by navigating to Settings > Account > Username.
How They Will Work
Chatting: Instead of giving out your mobile number, you can share a unique handle (e.g., @YourName) to let people contact you. A phone number is still required to register your account, but it will be hidden from new contacts.
No Public Directory:
There is no searchable directory or browsing feature. Someone must know your exact username to initiate contact, preventing random spam.
Username Keys:
To prevent unsolicited messages, you can set an optional Username Key (an extra code or verification). People will need to provide this key alongside your username before they can message you.
Meta Integration:
Creators, small businesses, and organizations will have the option to claim the same usernames they use on Instagram and Facebook.
Why the App is Introducing ThemPrivacy:
For years, joining large group chats or messaging new people meant automatically exposing your personal phone number to strangers. Usernames allow you to communicate while keeping your digits strictly private.
Digital Security:
Giving out a phone number can sometimes tie directly to your social media or financial services. Usernames serve as an extra layer of protection against digital fraud and unwanted contact.
Business Branding:
It gives creators and companies a clean, consistent, and recognizable brand identity across Meta's platforms without forcing them to hand out a business phone number on social media bios.
